Step 5: Advocacy and Voting

Overview: We encourage opportunities for public speaking while advocating on behalf of a nonprofit organization!

Once the group(s) have selected the non-profit organization they would like to receive the grant students should be prepared to present their research, advocate, and persuade their peers to vote for their non-profit organization.

Grade: 6-12

Phases Leader Guide Youth Guide
Objectives Students demonstrate their learning through synthesizing their experience and creating a product, presentation, or other demonstration of knowledge. They advocate on behalf of the social cause and nonprofit, and together, collectively determine which nonprofit will be awarded their Magnified Giving grant. (*Note: Consider how to include cross educating, educating, and celebrating knowledge with a larger audience–school, community, leadership team) This is the youth’s opportunity to organize their research, explain their why behind selecting the specific organization, present and persuade their peers, school administration, leadership team, or guests to vote on behalf of their organization.
Explanation The importance of this phase is to allow the students to share all of the information learned from step 2 thru step 5. What did they learn about the specific social cause, local non-profits supporting that cause, and what is the non-profit doing to support the issue in the community.

As the facilitator you will need to establish how presentations will be delivered: will the group deliver a slide deck verbal presentation, create a short video about the organization, poster presentation etc.

Magnified Giving encourages verbal presentation.
During this phase the youth will pull together all of the data learned from step 2 through step 5.
- Social cause impact on the community
- Organizations working to improve the situation
- Details about the organization learned during the research phase and connectivity/volunteering with the non-profit
- WHY is this important to the youth
Verification As the facilitator you will verify what the youth have learned during the process by what is shared during the presentation.
- Did they deliver information on your established requirements
- Did they connect with the non-profit/volunteer
- Did they seem knowledgeable about the organization and information being shared
By incorporating the information researched about the social issue, non-profit registration form, connection with the non-profit, answering the additional questions pulled during step 4.

The successful understanding of steps 1 thru 5 will all be presented in the advocacy and voting phase.
Activity Advocacy
During this phase of the project the goal is to support the youth in creating their final advocacy project. As the facilitator you must decide what this phase of the project will be. See resources provided for links to Google Slide verbal presentation or Video presentation guidelines and rubrics.

Voting
Voting results in the selection of the agency to receive the grant.
- In-class peer to peer presentation and vote
- Share via Google voting among the entire school
- Invite other community members, administration, teachers etc. to participate in the presentations as a panelist for judging
Get creative and we encourage you to include as many guests as possible. The opportunity to advocate cross educates peers and community.

How to control the voting process?
- Each youth receives one vote but cannot vote for themselves
- Each youth receives two votes - one for their own presentation and one for another peer
- Guest judges evaluate the presentations out of 100 pts. - highest presentation receives the funds
- Guest panelists receive one vote and youth presenters receive 2 votes (one for their own presentation and one for peer)
- Each classroom receives one vote so the class must discuss and persuade peers.
Another opportunity to get creative in the voting process.
Advocacy
During this phase youth will pull together all of the information gathered during step 2 - 5.
- Decide what is the key information to be included in the advocacy project.
- Reference the resources linked below for guidance on what should be included in the advocacy project.
- How do you incorporate your WHY for selecting the social cause and the specific non-profit being shared.
- How would the grant be used by the agency - what would they do with it?
Reflection Reflection should be incorporated into each section of the process but certainly the advocacy project.

Youth should reflect back on the why the social cause is important to them, why they would like to see improvements in this area for their community, city, and or state, why was the agency selected important to them above all others.
The youth reflection should be incorporated into the advocacy project. An explanation of why the cause and organization is most deserving of the funds and why the youth selected the topics. This should kick off the presentation or wrap it up.
