|What is the mission of your organization?||Smiles for Seniors is dedicated to remembering our elderly in assisted living and nursing facilities through gifts and activities. We believe that simple acts of kindness can bring great joy to the elderly.|
|Which social causes (up to 3 choices) does your agency address through its programming? *||
|Any comments about your selections you would like to share with the student philanthropists?|
|Depression is very common in nursing homes and assisted living facilities (estimated to be at least 60%). Depression can make the elderly feel sicker and make them less likely to want to eat and take their medications. Living in a nursing home can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation, a primary cause of poor health among older adults. Loss of family, friends, independence, not feeling well, difficulty communicating, etc. contribute to depression, which is a major health risk. In the recent past, depression was considered a natural consequence of aging, but depression is never normal and is a cause of significant decline in the emotional and physical health of the elderly.|
|Does your organization have volunteer opportunities available for students? *||Yes, Grades 6 – 12|
|List possible volunteer opportunities -or- a link to where they can be found on the web.||We have several facilities who welcome students to do craft projects with residents.
We welcome any handmade projects such as cards, scarves, jewelry, blankets, etc. that we can distribute to the seniors.
Collection drives for things such as shampoo and other toiletries, socks, snack cakes, chocolate, etc. are a great way for residents to receive these items.
