|What is the mission of your organization?|
|The Northside Farmers Market (NFM) is a project of the Northside Community Council, a 501(c)3 organization. NFM has a three-fold mission:
1. To support our urban community by increasing access to healthful and affordable foods;
2. To be a vibrant social and educational hub providing to our community the tools to discover and increase consumption of local foods;
3. To support our local food producers by working to create a viable business venue in which to sell their products.The NFM’s primary goals are:
1. To serve increased numbers of shoppers of all economic levels
2. To continue to expand and diversify the social outreach tools and education programs that will not only bring people to market, but deepen their level of engagement, and increase their knowledge of and consumption of healthful food;
3. To continue to support our selected farmers/vendors in finding the right product mix, marketing, and product education that will best serve our consumers and allow vendors to increase capacity and sales.

The Northside Farmers Market is located in a food desert, meaning the residents do not have easy access to a grocery store. NFM works to serve Northside’s low-income population by maintaining a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) token program enabling low-income individuals to use their federal benefits at market. NFM distributed $4,121 in SNAP benefits during 2018.
Additionally, NFM participates in the “Produce Perks” program, which allows the market to provide a $20 match per visit for SNAP customers to increase consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. NFM also accepts WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons. NFM distributed $3,824 in Produce Perks.
Children’s Cooking Classes
In 2018 the market created a cooking class curriculum with the help of a Jergens Foundation grant. This summer, we have been able to teach children about healthy food choices through shopping and cooking at the market. They have had the opportunity to meet the people that grow and produce the food they eat, learn how to choose and cook the food, and enjoy time in a community intent on living a healthier lifestyle.
NFM, in conjunction with CAIN, began created seasonal Budget Recipes brochures, which provide 5 dinner recipes for 4 people for $50 ($2.50 per person per meal) using seasonal ingredients found at the market. NFM printed 2,250 of the recipe brochures and have distributed them to CAIN, WIC, Produce Perks, and several other support agencies.
Supporting Farmers and Promoting Local, Healthful Food
NFM works to bring new customers to market by creating a welcoming atmosphere. Staff coordinate cooking demonstrations, weekly music and kid’s activities, includes craft vendors throughout the year, and through marketing campaigns. In addition, the market accepts credit and debit cards and absorbs transaction fees in order to make the service completely free to customers and vendors. The market had almost 9,000 visitors in 2018.
